If you search on the internet you would find many communities post, blogs and web site about “How to upgrade ESXi 4.0 to ESXi 4.1″.
Well, thats true but I’m writing my own experience with ESXi 4.0 which has Cisco Nexus 1000v (trial of course) and it’s upgrade process.

It seem there’s some problem on installing VMware ESXi 4.1 on the ESXi 4.0 (which mentioned by “Eric Gray” on his site “vCritical” as an UPDATE for his article) and the underlying platform should be ESXi 4.1.
I have problem on installing it directly on the ESXi 4.0, but there’s always a way to reach the goal as here the goal is running ESXi 4.1 on ESXi 4.0.

I’ve installed the VMware ESXi 4.1 on my home lab for learning purpose.
Today I decided to enable SSH on ESXi 4.1 for further use and also check the TSM (Tech Support Mode) on ESXi 4.1 in order to checking the different area on the ESXi itself.
So as usual I pressed the ALT+F1 and …. there is new message from VMware on this page!?
“Tech Support Mode has been disabled by administrator.”

Hi,
During my testing VMware ESXi 4.1 which is the last version currently, I’ve installed it on two VM on my VMware Workstation 7.1 which supporting ESX 4.0 as guest OS.
The system I’m used on my working place have Intel E5300 CPU, 2GB DDR2 Memory and running Windows XP SP3.

Finally I had chance and time to install and test the “VMware Heartbeat” which I had learnt to install, configure and use during one of my course.

There’s some note about this software which I think they may be good to mention as may be they come useful in latter exams

You need at least two NIC (one for vCenter connection and other as sync/heartbeat between two vCenter).
It’s recommended to config each NIC on separate vSwitch.
Default channel port: 57348
Client port: 52267

I will add more info about VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat latter on.
