It seem there’s some problem on installing VMware ESXi 4.1 on the ESXi 4.0 (which mentioned by “Eric Gray” on his site “vCritical” as an UPDATE for his article) and the underlying platform should be ESXi 4.1.
I have problem on installing it directly on the ESXi 4.0, but there’s always a way to reach the goal as here the goal is running ESXi 4.1 on ESXi 4.0.

Today, After a while I just shutdown one of my VMs in order to improve its storage capacity and after adding the new HDD to it, I realized that I don’t have any system with VMware vSphere Client installed so I went for powering it on by command using putty.

And guess what happened then …

ESXi - No License - Power On Error - 01

Yes, as the screen shot shows, it related to the license … Owww, I remembered that I didn’t insert the license key after the installation for using the full feature of vSphere in eval mode.

But, there’s an interesting thing here (at least its interesting for me). in the above picture, there’s two message in order of checking license, one is “Evaluation period is over” and the other is “License key has expired”. so its where the server check if its OK to power on a VM(s)or not. (or at least it shows its message)

so when I installed VMware vSphere client on one of my clients and connect it, I get the following message (just as I expected to see).

ESXi - No License - Power On Error - 02

So I entered my license key and powering it on using the vim-cmd and everything works fine

ESXi - No License - Power On Error - 04

Its the early morning experience as I never get any message related to license key.

Hi,

Finally I have split the Nested VMs video file into 3 part and upload it again into YouTube and also add them to the “Video Page”.

First part will demonstrate the creation and installation of VMware ESX 4.0 as guest OS.

Second part will demonstrate the test of network and its troubleshooting.

And finally, the third part will demonstrate the creation of test VM inside of guest ESX, powering it on and changes needed to make in order to let it run correctly.

I hope it became useful and just like before, all comment and notes are welcome.

Hi,

After a while and no post here, I thought it would be better to update the site by posting a news about my new video which uploaded to the YouTube.

I have also added this video to the “Video Page“, so you can check it from this page.

Just like any other post here, I would be happy to get your comments and notes.

Hi,

Just as I said before, I start posting the summary here.
So, let start it now, this post contain some info about:

  • Result of wrong OS type installation in VM with different OS type
  • VMware HA (Design, fail-over, …)

Result of wrong OS type installation in VM with different OS type

One configuration/step during the creation of new VM, is defining the OS type for that VM.

If any other OS except the OS type selected for VM, installed on VM, some of the following even (or all of them) may occurs:

  • Some performance issues (according to different method of memory access and addressing, …)
  • This would cause the incorrect VMware Tools to get installed in the VM
  • If the correct MCA/MCE architecture is not presented to the guest during boot may be it wouldn’t start at all

How to fix it:

  • Power off the VM.
  • Modify via GUI option General of the properties of your VM.
  • Power on the VM.
  • Reinstall the correct VMware Tools.

VMware HA (Design, fail-over, …)

When designing or using VMware HA, it’s better to take care of some element in order to get better performance, availability and facing less problem/error.

  • Setup/configure second SC/management network so you would have to path for check for host isolation.
  • Don’t use default just because they are default, check the other options and compare their result for your own situation. (Number of allowed host failures …)
  • For getting better result from your ha cluster, prevent using resource (cpu/memory) reservation as much as you can, as it affect directly the ha cluster performance (slot size/number of slot in cluster, …)
  • When using ha on Blade servers, on more than one enclosure use more smaller (at least two) cluster instead of one big cluster.

Feel free to leave comments or any idea you have.
These information are summary (or better say notes) I took during my studies for future use.
If I miss anything; please correct me, thanks.
